"Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is" Vince Lombardi

I thought it would be appropriate to find a football quote or an inspiration with Super Bowl XLV looming over us. Since many of us attend parties or purchase lots of junk food and overeat on Super Bowl Sunday, what would be better than for me to give tips to my faithful readers on how to survive this American iconic day. After all we invented the Super Bowl (I really think it has to do more with gorging than sport) and it has turned into a winter holiday eating event for all Americans. I am going to give some advice on what to eat and what not to eat (I threw a little Shakespearean connotation in there, sorry if that’s not very American). So, here are the options to choose from: Instead of potato chips-why not eat rice cakes they are both starches and the rice cakes are lightly salted. Instead of a slice of pizza-have an english muffin pizza (top and bottom are 100 calories, with tomato sauce and low-fat mozzarella cheese). As a substitute for buffalo wings-grill chicken tenderloins with a hot and spicy rub instead (just by grilling the chicken can reduce the calorie and fat amounts by 25%).

1-ounce (approx 10 chips)             1 rice cake lightly salted

150 calorie, 90 fat calories            35 calories, 0 fat

1 slice of pizza                    2 english muffin pizzas

250 calories, 15 g fat        175 calories, 7.5 g fat

Average 12 wings               4 grilled tenderloins w/spices

1,000 calories, 90 g fat      Approx-185 calories, 8 g fat

This is just a sampling of what you can eat as a healthy alternative. I wouldn’t recommend these different choices as everyday menu items, and you can certainly substitute your own healthy choices as well (we love to benefit, so please share your healthy recipes with us if you would like). I recently read that vegetable platters are one of the top 5 items for hosting a party. I get all goose bumps when I read these articles (it gives me hope that the population is at least trying to eat healthy). I posted  these above suggestions to keep you motivated and inspired for the “big day”.  Keep healthy and fit!

love those super bowl treats . Why not try some Wasa flatbread crackers with hummus, and top it off with a sliced olive, or make a an onion dip with low fat sour cream or even plain yogurt. For those of us who don’t do wings chilli is always a very good filling treat to fill us up enough so the temptation to chow down is kept at bay. Just use chopped turkey meat, kidney beans, onion, peppers, even some garlic. Instead of using the package of chili mix add your own red hot sauce and even pepper for that kick without the sodium content. I know this might not sound appealing but but a nice hearty salad can be quite satisfying without the calories Romaine lettuce, cucumbers, chick peas, olives some low fat feta or a little blue cheese and chopped up apple or even pear with a drizzle of olive oil and splash of vinegar and your good to go. I hope this helps a bit to cut back the calories but gives the flavors we all love

A little footnote using mustard instead mayo really works on most sandwiches along with hot cherry peppers 1 slice of wheat bread and the meat of your choice.Avacado with chopped onion a little bit of olive oil and lemon can be used as a spread for those sandwiches. The list really is endless and you can enjoy without to much guilt.

Love the new format, colors, pictures. Salsa is a great non fattening filler, put it on Delicious 19. These are large wheat cakes that come plain, garlic and sesame . They are 19 calories each and are a nice size to top with salsa, low fat mozzarella, low fat or fat free cream cheese with some pimento style olives. I found these cakes at Food Emporium. All natural, No preservatives no additives.
